WP's Low pursuing political objectives: Grace Fu

MY VIEW ON THE TOWN COUNCIL MANAGEMENT REPORT

By : Seow Hwee

I am not surprised with the overwhelming public questioning on the objectivity and results of the recent Town Council management report (TCMR). After-all, when the idea was first mooted, it had already attracted different responses from a wide spectrum of people, including MPs from the ruling and the opposition parties. While I think that there are some fine-tunings required (eg the selection of indicators and the assessment process), I am also of the view that the initiative is refreshing with a good intention of providing some form of benchmarking for Town Council performance.

Town Council report 'done objectively': Ms Grace Fu

Claims by Opposition-managed town councils that the recent Town Council Management Report was "unfair", "subjective" and loaded with a political agenda have been refuted by the Senior Minister of State for National Development, Grace Fu.

Minister Tharman: Singapore's success is due to hard work of its people

Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam participated in a CNN panel discussion on the world economy that was aired on Sunday, May 16. The show, hosted by Mr Fareed Zakaria, was recorded in late April and featured other guests like French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde; Mr Lawrence Summers, head of the White House Economic Council; and Mr Dominique Strauss-Kahn, managing director of the International Monetary Fund.

During the interview, Mr Fareed noted that Singapore was growing faster than perhaps any other country in the world. He asked Mr Shanmugaratnam why Singapore was so successful. In response, Mr Shanmugaratnam said Asia was a competitive place with highly motivated people.

Remarks by Dr Ng Eng Hen on Teaching of Mother Tongue Language

At the Press Conference on "Teaching of Mother Tongue Language" held on 11 May 2010, Minister Ng Eng Hen noted that there were strong reactions to his interview three weeks ago and he made the following points:

  • "MOE is not reducing the weighting of MTL in PSLE. I believe that MTL are important to all Singaporeans and to our future."
  • "The MTL Review Committee’s goal is to maintain our bilingual policy, not weaken it. The Committee has some initial ideas, which I will outline."
  • "The review must cover the exam system. It is a critical piece that complements the other initiatives to strengthen MTL teaching."

PM Lee's Remarks at the Press Conference on Mother Tongue Language on 11 May 2010 at Istana

I called this morning’s press conference to explain the Government’s thinking on the question of the mother tongue language or as MOE calls it “MTL”.

Let me first outline my key points before I explain the background and what this issue is about and what the way forward is. The first point is – Mother Tongue remains crucial.  It is the foundation of our educational system, has been for many years and will continue to be, and we have no intentions of changing that.

Secondly, we are not reducing the weight of Mother Tongue languages at PSLE.  I put that directly to address a lot of concerns that have arisen. That is not going to change but there are things we have to do to the examinations and to the teaching of mother tongue.  We have to update the curriculum, we have to update the teaching, we have to update the examining of Mother Tongue languages because our language environment in Singapore is changing and we have to adapt to that.  We have to fit the diverse backgrounds and aptitudes of our students in schools.  That means we have to customize our content and it means we need more resources for Mother Tongue and particularly, it will mean we need more Mother Tongue teachers.

PRIME MINISTER LEE HSIEN LOONG'S MAY DAY 2010 MESSAGE

While May day may just be another non-eventful public holiday for Singaporean, the same cannot be said for some countries as we see demonstrations and even violence by workers on the street. I feel fortunate to be a Singaporean who, despite having differences, are normally rational enough to address challenges and issues in more peaceful and effective ways. We would like to present Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's May Day 2010 Message which calls for a united front towards sustaining continuous growth for Singapore.
